Abstract

Hudbah ibn Khashram was a poet of the Umayyad period and belonged to the Banu Udhra tribe, which was famous for chaste love poetry. This study aims to explore the personality of Hudbah ibn Khashram and his standing among the poets of the Umayyad era, and to demonstrate the influence of the tribal environment on his life and poetry. It also seeks to analyze the themes and artistic characteristics of his poetry, particularly those related to Udhri love poetry and chaste love. Furthermore, it aims to clarify the relationship between the poet and the tribal society, and the customs and traditions that influenced his emotional experience. This study also contributes to understanding an aspect of Umayyad literature and social life during that era. He became known for his sincere poems that expressed longing, loyalty, and the sorrow of separation. His style was simple, emotional, and honest, making him one of the notable poets of Udhrī poetry, although only a small amount of his poetry survived and no independent diwan was compiled for him. His poetry and stories were mentioned in classical literary books such as الأغاني and الشعر والشعراء.  Poetry also reflects the conservative tribal society of his time and shows the sufferings under the restrictions of social traditions and customs.
