Abstract

This study explores the methodological features of Shaykh Muḥammad al-Amīn al-Shinqīṭī in his juristic selections as presented in his renowned exegesis Aḍwā’ al-Bayān fī Tafsīr al-Qur’ān bil-Qur’ān. As one of the most prominent scholars of the 14th Islamic century, al-Shinqīṭī displayed exceptional mastery in combining Qur’anic interpretation, jurisprudence, and legal theory. The research highlights his unique approach to evaluating juristic disagreements, his use of precise terminology to express varying levels of preference and strength of evidence, and the carefully structured manner in which he analyzes and resolves disputed issues.

The study demonstrates that al-Shinqīṭī employed a rich set of technical expressions—such as al-taḥqīq (verification), al-ḥaqq (the truth), al-ṣawāb (the correct view), al-ṣaḥīḥ (the sound opinion), al-aẓhar (the more apparent), aqwā (stronger), aqrab (closer), and aḥwaṭ (more cautious)—each reflecting a specific degree of certainty or preference in his juristic reasoning. Additionally, his method of taḥrīr al-mas’alah (delineating the point of contention) stands out, as he often begins by clarifying the agreed-upon aspects before identifying the disputed elements, or by dividing the issue into two clear extremes with a middle position.

The findings reveal that his juristic choices are firmly rooted in a combination of textual evidence, sound legal principles, and deep awareness of classical scholarly discourse. His precision in defining terminology, organizing arguments, and clarifying disputed matters makes his methodology a distinctive and valuable model for contemporary legal and exegetical studies.
